Así es, esta pinche nevando. Muchas cosas han pasado en estos meses desde mi ultimo post sobre las cuales no he escrito pero si he tomado fotos y las pueden ver en el flickr. El trabajo es mucho pero estoy feliz. Carla Jean y Mary Jane (aka Mariah) han sido buenas conmigo. Solo queria dejar un registro de la primera nevada (aunque hubo una hace como dos semanas pero fue en la noche y no vi nada).

Saludos a todos desde los Milwaukees (como dice el Raz en su mente retorcida como un churro). Pues hoy empecé con las clases de trigonometría, en uno de mis grupos hay un chavo que es sordo, pero le echa las ganas y hace preguntas bien inteligentes, en cambio en otro grupo hay una bola de webones, en fin, se las dejaré caer sabrosón.

Pues ayer pasé algo de frío en la noche, así que hoy fuí al Wal-Mart a comprar un cobertor (negro como las sábanas y el 90% de mis camisetas). Pues compré el cobertor, unos audífonos y una lampara. En el camino de regreso, un vagabundo apestoso se puso a predicarme el Evangelio y a decirme que todo esta caro y que no valgo madre por andar comprando una colcha. Me subo al camión con un poco más de gente y el vagabundo también se sube y le empieza a decir lo mismo a todas las personas en el camión, depués un señor empezó a pedirnos limosna, estaba curioso porque tenía manos de tortuga ninja, tres dedos así grandotes, luego un vatillo me preguntó si tenía cambio de 200 dólares, y para rematarla a mi lado se sentó un enano nalgón, el caso es que el pedo estaba así muy surrealista; llegué al depa y tomé las fotos que acabo de subir al flickr. Lo más extraño que me ha pasado así fue en MTY una vez que un tonto me trató de asaltar con una pistola ficticia que hizo con sus dedos pulgar e índice.

En fin, ayer fue el día del trabajo y nadie trabajó así que el Dr Kahl me invitó a su casa a cenar con una familia que los visitó desde León, Guanajuato, Mexicio. He aquí su guitarra, una Gibson ES175SH que se toca pocamadre. Los extraño a todos. Besos y abrazos.

Las Llaves Negras

Hola pequeños amigos míos. Esta semana ha sido interesante, gracias al Señor Jesus he podido poner en orden mis cosas, ya tengo seguro medico y tengo todo arreglado ya para empezar el semestre, estaré tomando los cursos de Meteorología Sinóptica y el curso de Modelado de Contaminación del Aire y estaré impartiendo el curso de Trigonometría (lo cual me hizo recordar a Linda y a Edgar pelándosela en el primer semestre de Economía, todos al borde del llanto con las identidades trigonométricas).

El Dr Kahl y su familia han sido a toda madre conmigo, me han hecho sentir en casa, esta semana su hijo Joey (fan de Family Guy, Raz!) se fue a Madison a estudiar. Suerte para él, que Gorchito nos lo cuide.

Pues al parecer la próxima semana tocarán los Black Keys aquí en Milwaukee, en el Turner Hall Ballroom, es un must-see.

Ya me acabé el libro de Star Wars: Dark Lord, The Rise of Darth Vader, muy bueno. Si todo sale bien, este lunes me mudo a Kenilworth. Tambien hay otros conciertos programados con el Jon y Carol Kahl, French finger-style guitarist Pierre Bensusan, September 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Recital Hall. Espero que todos estén muy bien, se les extraña un chingo.

Saludos! Les dejo el siguiente Informe de Gobierno del Virreinato.

Llegué a las tierras de Wisconsin el Jueves 14 de Agosto del año 2008 de la era de nuestro Señor Jesús aproximadamente a las 6 de la tarde. Esa noche la pasé en casa del Dr Jonathan Kahl, la familia es a toda madre y todos super hippies, los he visitado casi todas las tardes desde que llegué. En estos días la he pasado en tours por la ciudad y cosas por el estilo. Por ahora estoy quedandome en casa de un profesor medio extraño pero muy amable que se llama Kevin McLeod (como el de Highlander), y tambien es escocés, por fortuna no usa falditas ni mamadas de esas, pero si le entra a una cheve super fuerte. El primero se septiembre me mudo a mi depa (con internet) y empiezo clases.

Aquí cerca tengo las siguientes tiendas:

-Wade's Guitar Shop (mi favorita).
-Milwaukee's Finests Guitars (medio snub pero chida).
-Schwartz Bookshop (es como un Barne's and Noble pero local, también hay un Barne's and Noble pero esta tienda es mas comoda).
-Stone Creek Coffee (un Starbucks local con un pedo hippie orgánico y mamadas así, aqui estoy usando el Internet).
-Trader Joe's (como un Whole Food's igual de pedo hippie orgánico pero muchisimo mas barato).
-Wal Mart.

Desafortunadamente el Target y el Best Buy me quedan muy lejos, pero no es naada que un camionazo no pueda arreglar. Hay malls y cosas asi muy cerca y hay un como cinco tiendas de bicicletas todas en corto (pronto compraré la mía). Aqui todo mundo anda en bicicleta, viejitos, niños, gente encorbatada, esta muy surrealista el pedo. El camión cuesta como $20.00pesos, comparado con los $7.00 de MTY pues es un chingo pero en la UWM me darán una tarjeta con la que me saldrá gratis. He estado comiendo muy saludable, no hay mucha opción, aqui la gente ve mal el McDonald's y esas cosas, de hecho lo odian, todos los restaurantes son locales y de comida organica y todo muy saludable, la comida está relativamente barata y el viernes acabo de ir a un mercado donde venden vegetales locales, muy rico todo, me chingué un churro relleno de fresas, delicioso. He estado caminando como 10km diarios para moverme por la ciudad, aunque tambien he estado usando el camión. Los camiones estan medio raros, son muy modernos pero tienes que jalar una cuerda para hacer sonar la campana (que les costaba un botón y un timbre electronico)? En los salones de la UWM usan pizarrones de gis, bien oldschool. Saludos a todos, espero que estén muy bien. Los extraño mucho, me hacen mucha falta.

Acá pronto tocará Foo Fighters y Ryan Adams (vaquero).

Interpolitis

Existen algunas definiciones para este término, las tres que mas me gustan, son: (1) El deseo de estar en el top ten de los más buscados por esta organización, (2) el deseo obsesivo por la música minimalista y el fino rock de la banda Interpol y (3) que se te inchó el interpol (entiendase por las raices grecolatinas "inter" - entre y "pol" - testiculos, o sea inchazón entre los testículos).

Con la segunda definición posteo sobre la lira del guitarrista de Interpol, Daniel Kessler: una Epiphone Casino sunburst. Esta guitarra fue usada por grandes como John Lennon, Chuck Berry y más reciente por el vatillo narigon de The Dears. E aquí la Casino:

Where Milwaukee sits in a valley of artistic prominence, with the cosmopolitan mountains of Chicago and Minneapolis on either side, there is one art form in which Milwaukee claims supremacy. In recent years, Milwaukee has become the major hub of solo acoustic guitar playing.   Since the 1980s, Milwaukee has more or less cemented itself as the unofficial capitol of classic American finger-style guitar.  Finger-style composer and educator John Wunsch refers to Milwaukee as "the center of the American guitar universe."

One cornerstone player in the development of this supreme reputation is John Stropes. A University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee professor, Stropes is a longtime guitar teacher and historian.   Solo acoustic guitar heavyweight Michael Gulezian calls Stropes the "papal authority of American finger-style guitar." Today, he stands at the top of the pyramid within the guitar program at UWM - a program unlike any other in the world.

Until the 1980s, the title finger-style guitar had not yet come about. There was a community of players and composers within the genre as we know it today across the country. They were, however, all without a real classification.

Legendary players such as John Fahey, Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke had already established their own names, but their style had no formal name. These are some of the most celebrated composers of our time. Nevertheless, they were riding on the back of the bus to Guitar Town, behind the more highly defined styles of classical and jazz.   Then, Stropes, along with all the heavy-hitters of the genre, would convene in Milwaukee to try to establish a solid community.

Stropes also realized that there were no college-level finger-style programs that, in his words, "could add legitimacy" to the genre. From this idea, his vision has since grown into a reality that is just starting to take shape. UWM professor, and "teammate" of Stropes', Rene Izquierdo shares the vision. "The scholastic world has been constricted to classical music, which is a terrible mistake," Izquierdo attests. He believes that the guitar program at UWM is "a new road for finger-style guitar. "  The program, now in its third year, is unlike any other in the entire world. UWM currently offers the only bachelor's degree in a student's choice between classical, jazz, flamenco or American finger-style guitar. It is also the only university in the world that offers a degree in finger-style performance.   "The unique thing about this program," Izquierdo says, "is that it takes many resources and styles and puts them into one program. "  We want to have a positive influence on the future," Stropes insists, "…so that the music can flourish." 

The program is propelling this art form into an extremely bright and promising future.   "This is the future of American finger-style guitar!" Gulezian exclaimed, part awed, somewhat humbled and with complete enthusiasm.

Este verso me llegó por accidente pero me gustó mucho. No tengo muchas cosas, aun no soy rico y famoso, pero tengo rock y libros, amor y pasión y eso me basta, es suficiente, a veces simplemente hay que confiar en lo que se siente y no tanto en lo que se piensa o tiene sentido.

Aqui les presento a mi "loud guitar". La compré en Muir Guitars en McAllen TX. Es una USA Fender Fat Stratocaster Highway One. Una pieza hermosa y pues ya no es un instrumento de principiantes, la sensación del cuello es sofisticada, rápida y chunky. El cabezal del estilo CBS de los 70's es un buen toque, que aumenta la masa del cuello y le da un poco de peso. Las pastillas son AlNiCo III, que reduce los agudos pero sin perder el "twang", la pastilla sencilla del centro esta embobinada en inverso lo cual hace que en la seleccion intermedia no se escuche el ruidito típico de la Strat, la pastilla del cuello es un Atomic Humbucker, bastante LOUD. No es el clásico sonido de la Strat pero es un buen híbrido entre el sonido Fender y Gibson, una máquina de ROCK.

Lo más interesante es el acabado sunburst en laca de nitrocelulosa, el acabado que se usó en las guitarras de los 50s. Un acabado delgado y sensible que permite a la madera respirar y vibrar y hace que el instrumento sea un poco mas ligero. el acabado al ser sensible se gasta facilmente y es más susceptible a raspones, golpes y reacciones con otras superficies. En otras palabras, se va a pelotear mas rápido. Me encanta!

Gretsch tiene produciendo guitarras desde 1883 en NY. El negocio fue familiar y ahorita rockean bajo la administración de Fender Musical Instruments Co. Sus instrumentos han sido tocados por una lista impresionante de nombres, desde los Beatles y los Rolling Stones hasta bandas como AC/DC, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead..., U2, Brian Setzer y los maestros de Cafe Tacvba por mencionar solo algunos (alguna vez vi a Mijares con una de estas pero no hagan caso). Lo peculiar de las guitarras Gretsch es que tienen el look de country y rockabilly que ninguna otra marca ha logrado perpetrar. Yo las veo pienso en algo asi, vaquero, texano.

Unos de mis modelos favoritos es la White Falcon, la cual fue presentada en el NAMM show de 1954 como un modelo concepto el cual no se proyectaba sacar a producción. La idea de esta guitarra era presentar una alternativa a la bien plantada Gibson Super 400. El diseño radical de la época muestra un masivo cuerpo de 17in en color blanco y con toques dorados, con un tremolo Bigsby, muy diferentes al clásico sunburst con puente fijo de Gibson. Se le consideró el Cadillac de las guitarras y los distribuidores de instrumentos pronto estaban pidiendola a gritos desesperados y con el crujir de dientes que solo en el Hades se puede escuchar. Entonces empieza la produccion de la White Falcon

La White Falcon es una hermosa obra de arte guitarrero, con su escala de 25.5in se obtienen gordos y redondos tonos. Tiene muchas variantes, desde puentes fijos, Bigsbys y variaciones de pastillas y colores (Black Falcon). En este post muestro la White Falcon I, una replica de la original White Falcon de ese legendario NAMM, con un tremolo Bigsby y pastillas High Sensitive Filtertron (los nombres de las pastillas de Gretsch son asi, futuristas de los años 50s como los Supersonicos). Nunca he visto una en vivo, espero poder tocar una pronto. ¿A poco no esta mamona la guitarra?

El Aparato

Todavía emocionado por el concierto de Café Tacvba. Un concierto por demás excitante. Buenas rolas, bien ejecutadas. MUCHAS canciones, creo que es uno de los concierto más largos a los que he asistido si no es que el más largo. Es mi deseo escribir sobre una de las guitarras más sobresalientes del concierto, la Fender Starcaster. Esta es una guitarra que se produjo durante los setentas y se detuvo su producción en los primeros años de los ochentas. La construcción es peculiar debido a que las guitarras semi-hollow como ésta generalmente son de cuellos de caoba y de construcción set-neck (pegadas al cuerpo como un violín). Esta pieza por lo contrario tiene un cuello de maple, con el fingerboard de maple y además la construcción es bolt-on (con tornillos como la mayoría de las guitarras Fender). Definitivamente esta lira es la Muerte Chiquita.

En el concierto de Café Tacvba la guitarra sobresalió en conjunto con el famoso melodión que toca el Rusbel, una Gretsch de doce cuerdotas, una Gretsch Chet Atkins (la de la pluma), una Jaguar negra deliciosa, una Epiphone Casino en color natural y una Stratocaster en un color sunburst erotico con fretboard de maple además de un bajo Gretsch (o Mosrrite no estoy seguro) y un Rickenbacker. El playlist estuvo increíble, mi favorito fue el set de Revés. Los Tacvbos son unos verdaderos genios y realmente se merecen el título de "artistas". No puedo dejar de insistir en lo profesionales, versátiles y visionarios que son los maestros de Café Tacvba. Gente, "snap the fuck out of it", Nigga no es arte, es una aberración de la naturaleza, un insulto a la inteligencia, un completo puñetas. ¿Por que no hay más bandas mexicanas que realmente valgan la pena? ¿Será porque no ensayan nunca? ¿Estarán escondidas por allí? ¿Será que Televisa los manda a secuestrar? ¿Qué fue lo que paso? ¿A donde se fue el talento? Viva México cabroons.

Otro usuario de la Fender Starcaster es Jonny (El Gringo) Greenwood. ¿Blame it on the Black Star(caster)?

Hace unos días estaba escuchando un poco de The Mars Volta y su nuevo disco The Bedlam in Goliath, que está bueno, muy a su estilo. Omar Rodriguez-López, el guitarrista y líder de esta banda, siempre ha usado una lira Ibanez con un cuerpo de AX pero con el cabezal de las Artcore, guitarras de jazz, con una sola pastilla, generalmente le pone un mini rail de Seymour Duncan, un humbucker que es del tamaño de singlecoil y sin control de tono, únicamente de volumen; lo más sencillo posible. Aqui hay una foto de Omar con su muy obscura guitarra.

Este 2008 en el show de NAMM, Ibanez presentó un modelo signature para Omar Rdz, que continúa en la tradición minimalista de sus guitarras previas, una sola pastilla mini-rails, control de volumen, una escala corta de 24" (como la de una Fender Mustang), y un muy interesante cuerpo al estilo de las Jetking, solo que más pequeño. La guitarra se ve interesante, con un aire retro sesentoso muy chidito. La guitarra está peloteable y promete entregar buenos tonos y una gran facilidad de ejecución. El único contra que le veo es que la pastilla no es Seymour Duncan original, así que es probable que necesite un reemplazo, no es que las pastillas de Ibanez sean malas, pero no hay como el delicioso, jugoso, gordo y grosero tono de las Duncan. Drooool!

Guitar Center o Day-Care Center?

Tres meses sin postear, creo que es un nuevo record para Hobbit Guitar. Postearé sobre mi berrinche de Guitar Center (GC) en McAllen. Para los que no sepan que es el GC, es un gran supermercado de instrumentos, específicamente guitarras. El nuevo GC en McAllen es muchísimo mas grande que el original, lo cual les da capacidad para tener muchos amplificadores en display para probar, un cuarto aislado donde tienen guitarras vintage en vitrinas y hasta un enorme cuarto con control de humedad para las guitarras acústicas, las más caras también en vitrinas.

La pesadilla empieza cuando llego dispuesto a probar hermosas (y algunas feas) guitarras y encuentro a una horda de adolecentes emo "tocando" riffs "metaleros" a todo volumen, obviamente, adolescentes modernos, no les importa el bienestar del prójimo, asi que muy apenas pude escuchar mis propios pensamientos. Además todas las guitarras llenas de deditos y peloteadisimas. No me mal entiendan, no tengo nada en contra de jóvenes aficionados a la six string wonder, pero cuando uno es joven, inexperto, y no domina el instrumento, preferentemente bajas el volumen del ampli para no causar pena a los que se tienen que chingar tu mala ejecución. Los "muchachitos" (o eran muchachitas?, no lo se, los pantalones ajustados y el maquillaje me confundían) se veían mas o menos como este ente andrógino:

Así que alli estoy, entre seis o siete emosexuales tratando de tocar cualquier cosa. Escapé hacia el cuarto de las guitarras acústicas para tocar bonitas canciones de Iron and Wine y relajarme, pero noooooo! Alli vienen dos emos a tocar los pinches mismos riffs en guitarras acústicas y en un banjo. Tristeza. Así que, para todos los emitos que ronden por allí, primero, su música no es metal, segundo, parecen niñas, tercero, bajenle a sus pinches amplis cuando esten en una tienda, no a todo el mundo le gusta su pedorrencia de riffs, cuarto, se la comen. Hay buena música allí, solo que sus copetes no les dejan ver nada. Hay buenas nuevas bandas de metal y de cualquier otra cosa, edúquense y aprendan a respetar! Así es como se ve un verdadero guitarrista de metal!

Benson & Edges

En estos días he estado disfrutando, como nunca, de las hermosas cosas de la vida y de las fractalidades del universo. Y hablando de hermosas coincidencias entre ellas está mi Ibanez AF75BS a quien he dedicado más tiempo con este nuevamente descubierto amor por el sonido de las cajas de jazz (aumentado por canciones como 15 Step del nuevo disco de Radiohead, In Rainbows) posteo sobre la extraordinaria GB200BS.

Después de haber probado las dulces mieles de la AF75BS, una guitarra de precio y manufactura discretos me asombro al pensar que clase de instrumentos confeccionará Ibanez con sus líneas profesionales; tal es el caso del modelo signature de George Benson, un afamado guitarrista de jazz que empezó a tocar en los 60s y que siempre ha preferido a la japonesa Ibanez por sobre otras marcas. Personalmente me gusta el estilo de George Benson, porque aún cuando mantiene el puro estilo jazzistico va hacia el limite mezclando hábil y sabrosamente con el funk sin llegar a ser pretencioso y sin sonar a caca.

El instrumento es inmenso una pulgada y media menos ancha que la Gibson Super 400 pero media pulgada más gorda (a veces la traigo gorda). La parte superior es mas gruesa de lo normal para evitar feedback, las pastillas super 58's de Ibanez, lo mejor de la compañía. Un hermoso tailpiece, puente y knobs de ebano. La guitarra es simplemente y puramente hermosa, elegante y poderosa. El precio es de $2900usd pero comparado con los $13000usd de la Gibson Super 400 que no sacaría del estuche por temor a ponerle un dedito encima, pues mejor la Ibanez. Se me antoja tocar Scatterbrain con esa lira. Gracias, mi estimado y pinche cupido pulquero tipo IMSS, te has ganado una estrellita maricona en la frente.

Una noche de análisis guitarrero descubrí algo interesante, tal vez es una alucinación causada por tanta pinche guitarra que veo y estudio (pasará lo mismo con el estambre, Navi?). Me da la impresión de que la Ibanez RG, prima de la serie JEM de Steve Vai que surgio en 1987, es un híbrido entre la Fender Strat y la Gibson SG. Lo mejor de ambos mundos, cuello de maple bolt-on con el single coil en la posición media (Fender Strat) y el cabezal angulado, dos humbuckers y acceso ilimitado al registro agudo por los prominentes cuernitos (Gibson SG); además de tremolo Floyd Rose original. Algún día haré una comparación in situ de estas tres legendas de la música moderna. Adios.

El sonido es algo que se pasa por alto muy a menudo. El sonido de una voz hermosa, de tiernas y graciosas palabras, del viento en el campo, del aceite en la sartén, de una coca helada siendo destapada, un niño llorando, el vidrio al romperse... el sonido tiene tanto poder como una imagen, un sabor o un aroma. Existe el buen sonido y el mal sonido. Por mucho tiempo pensé que el sonido de la musica provenía del instrumento, y en parte así es, pero el verdadero tono, la verdadera escencia de la musica viene de los dedos, de la fuerza, del sentimiento con que se ejecute lo que al final de cuentas es solo un instrumento.

Esto viene por algo que posteare después... de mi interminable búsqueda por la guitarra perfecta que me ayude a proyectar del único modo que sé todo lo que tengo dentro. Esa búsqueda comenzó cuando descubrí mi guitarra acústica a quien afectuosamente llamé Mariah. Y continuó con la compra y venta de muuuuchas otras guitarras y bajos. Ahora encontré una pieza que será dificil dejar, una a la que hasta el mismo Dr. Kahl, propietario de una Gibson ES175-SH se refirio como de "...excelente manufactura y tonos y una impresionante facilidad de ejecución..."

A lo que quiero llegar es que existe una conexión entre la madera y el espíritu, instrumentos para cada tipo de persona (como varitas de Harry Potter). Aún cuando es solo una pieza de madera, sus características harán que el ejecutante se sienta cómodo, seguro y lleno de habilidad, lo cual por su parte causará un tono más sólido, hermoso y puro al proyectar más fielmente el sentir de quien le toca, causando una retroalimentación positiva en el ciclo musical. En 1973 comenzó una de las leyendas mas grandes del mundo de la guitarra, Taylor. Esta compañía por más de treinta años se ha dedicado a la confección de guitarras acústicas que han sido veneradas por muchos por su gran respuesta y sus tonos peculiarmente inigualables. ¿Qué pasa cuando un nombre como Taylor, que ha dedicado toda su existencia y esfuerzos a la construcción de instrumentos acústicos decide incursionar a los confines de lo eléctrico? Algo facinante es lo que pasa. Taylor ha creado una guitarra que es un híbrido entre una guitarra acústica y una eléctrica, pero más hacia el lado de lo eléctrico.

Ahora quisiera aclarar algo, una guitarra electroacústica, como generalmente se les llama es una guitarra acústica que tiene una pastilla piezoeléctrica (cerámica) en el puente (donde se ponen las cuerdas en el cuerpo) y tiene además ecualizadores en uno de los costados y un jack donde se conecta el cable y esa señal es luego amplificada. Lo que Taylor preseta es una guitarra eléctrica con una pastilla activa estilo lipstick (pero que realmente es un humbucker) en un cuerpo hueco de caoba, además de tener una pastilla oculta por debajo del cuello en la unión del cuello y el cuerpo (increible, para los sonidos jazzeros) y varios sensores en el interior del cuerpo (para poder generar los sonidos de una guitarra totalmente acústica). Esto le da a este increible instrumendo la capacidad de sonar totalmente y puramente acústico o totalmente eléctrico y la mezcla de ambos. ¡Un espectro de tonos conmovedor! Como para tocar una rolita de Pantera y en seguida una de Iron and Wine (que por cierto toca una electroacústica de Taylor), todo con el mismo instrumento.

El instrumento es caro empezando en los $2000.00usd que comparado con una Les Paul Std esta en el mismo precio y te ofrece una paleta más amplia que cualquier otra cosa jamás imaginada. Las mejores cosas la vida vienen de donde uno menos se lo espera.

Empesaba a temer que mi instrumento favorito fuera una de las causas de la destruccion del medio ambiente. Anualmente se fabrican grandes cantidades de instrumentos a partir de madera. Cuatro de las firmas más grandes en el mercado guitarrero Taylor, Gibson, Martin y Fender, las cuales son propietarias de un montón más de marcas, entre ellas Epiphone, Tobias, Valley Arts, Baldwin, Gretsch, Jackson, Charvel, Guild, Tacoma y Squier, han creado una coalisión conjuntamente con Greenpeace, la "MusicWood Coalition". El objetivo principal de esta organización es vigilar los métodos, sitios y cantidades de madera generada y a la vez cambiar antiguas formas de obtenerla para asegurar la producción maderas de alta calidad de una forma completamente sustentable. Bueno, ya era hora de sentarme a postear, y mas que nada lo hago para relajarme un rato. He disfrutado mucho mi AF75BS, el cuello es facinante y la acción es comoda, desafortunadamente muy diferente al cuello grueso y dificil de tocar de digamos una Epiphone Joe Pass. He mejorado mucho mi habilidad con el instrumento y la diferencia la hizo el instrumento mismo. Afortunadamente, no tuve que desembolsar los 2000usd para un instrumento ridiculamente caro. Ibanez me ha dejado muy satisfecho y soy un orgulloso usuario de esta marca japonesa.

Uno de sus modelos es una guitarra 60osa, realmente tomaron el espíritu de las guitarras asiáticas que se hacían hace cuarenta años tales como las Coral o las Hagstrom viejas que eran preciadas y lo siguen siendo por muchos músicos reconocidos. La JetKing2 es la tercera generación de este instrumento que se empezó a fabricar hace unos 4 o 5 añitos, nene. La serie JTK1 ya fue descontinuada asi como este año fue descontinuada la JTK2 sunburst para dar lugar a la nueva JTK2 negra y roja. Ahora el cuello es un poco más ancho con perfil estilo "D". El cabezal es plano, no angulado como Ibanez suele hacerlo, solo para darle ese tono Fenderesque. Ahora la pastilla del puente es un Humbucker con los magnetos expuestos, para aumentar la respuesta y aumentar la paleta de tonos. Los switches retro que se ven en el pickguard son coilspliters que ellos llaman "Rocker Switches". Lo que un coiltap o coilsplit hace es que separa la señal de las bobinas de la pastilla, entonces en vez de tener el sonido grueso y robusto de un Humbucker se obtiene el sonido claro, brillante y funky de una Singlecoil, facinante. Lo mejor... modicos 300usd. Eso compraria yarn o iPod, pero tambien puede comprar uno de los instrumentos más funky que he visto.

Ah, l'amour! Nos lleva a hacer cosas increibles. A alcanzar los más oscuros rincones de nuestra psique. Por la persona amada, haríamos cualquier cosa, por la musa inspiradora que nos arranca del mundo. El más tácito ejemplo de esto lo ví hace poco cuando un querido amigo logró lo que parecía una tarea imposible: aprender a tocar el bajo en un mes, y el bajeo no era fácil del todo (yo le dije que era sencillo para que se lo chutara =P ). El buen Ed realizó una ejecución memorable en su boda. Y como todo músico, se quedó con ganas de... de más! Y allí empieza la búsqueda de su primer bajo y el resultado fue maravilloso.

La serie Artcore de Ibanez que hizo su debut en 2005 se ha distinguido por su calidad y poder sonoro y esto no se limitó únicamente a las guitarras si no que se extendió hacia los bajos. El AGB140TBR es un bajo semihueco de maple y cuello de caoba. El cuerpo es de corte sencillo y tiene los especiales hoyos en "f" agrandados clasicos de la serie artcore. El acabado en café transparente es fino. Es un instrumento pesado. Algo que me sorprendio de este instrumento fueron sus maquinarias. El puente es el modelo Gibraltar III Bass bridge, el cual le hace honor a su nombre. La pastilla ACHB1 da sonidos claros, gruesos y redondos casi acusticos. Este bajo no es un juguete, es digno de cualquier bajista profesional. Y por todo esto, felicidades Ed! Bienvenido al mundo del bajo.

Como la baseball?

Hijole razilla chiquilla! Que creen que acabo de hacer? Acabo de comprar una hermosa guitarra. Una Ibanez AF75BS. Una chulada! Es un instrumento de cuerpo hueco. Una guitarra de jazz. Lo sorprendente es que aun siendo de jazz es muy versatil a la hora de dar tonos distorsionados y rockerones. El cuello es sólido, grueso y sorprendentemente rápido o tal vez lo siento así por estar acostumbrado a tocar el bass. El acabado en brown sunburst es elegante y conmovedor. El cabezal grande de Ibanez hace que la guitarra sea pesada hacia el cuello pero esto es comun de este tipo de instrmentos. El puente es móvil, como el de un violín, o sea, no esta pegado ni atornillado al cuerpo, es de madera, lo cual favorece los robustos tonos de la guitarra y le da un tono cálido y acogedor. I think I'm settling with this one for ever as in other aspects in my life.

Cuando empezó la euforia de los "muscle car" de motores ridículamente potentes tales como el Hemi, las personas morían (tanto figurada como literalmente) por competir y correr en las calles, síndrome que misteriosamente se encuentra en los genes del Gera. Esta enfermedad del "competition car" no quedó enclaustrada tan solo para los automovilistas sino que aún el fenómeno contagió al mundo de las seis cuerdas. En este post presento cuatro versiones modernas de competition guitars, que primeramente tuvo sus orígenes con la competition Mustang y ahora podemos encontrar guitarras tales como la Cyclone II que tiene el mismo perfil y competition stripes de su antecesora Competition Mustang de los 60's. Muestro también la John Mayer Strat, la bonita Toronado GT y la poderosa Gibson SG GT. Estas me recuerdan del bonito Mini de Navi (combina con la Toronado GT =P ).

Superman

Por qué Superman usaba los calzones por fuera? Eso no es super, bueno, lo es, es superestúpido. Pero lo que si es super es la Gibson Super 400-CES. Esta hermosa pieza archtop hizo su debut en el año de 1951 como la Super 400C solo que en esas epocas estaba equipada con pastillas P-90´s, pero su configuración y hechura se ha mantenido con los años con excepción de que ahora se contruye con pastillas '57s Classic. Es como el arquetipo de la guitarra de jazz, enorme, con clase y elegancia hasta en las cuerdas. Esta delicia musical se puede comprar por módicos $11300usd. Quisiera dedicar este post a la dicha del matrimonio de Ed y Dulce. Que tengan un matrimonio tan hermoso, rico y sonoro como la Super 400CES (en mi mente eso es facinante) y que por las eternidades puedan crear hermosa música juntos.

Gretsch a fabricado desde 1883 la autentica guitarra country (bueno, siempre que veo una Gretsch pienso en los llanos de TX), con un sentimiento de antiguedad y clase, estos elegantes instrumentos son utilizados por un sin fin de artistas, desde el maestro Chet Atkins, ZZTop, Bono y The Edge el de U2 (que tiene su propio modelo personal), Chris Cornell e incluso Wes Borland de Limp Bizkit (que asegura que es su Gretsch White Falcon la que da los mejores sonidos gruesos y graves y no las Ibanez de 7 cuerdas). Gretsch es ahora una marca del grupo Fender desde el 2002. La lira que el buen Keen me pidio comentar es la facinante Duo Jet reissue de 1957, viene en dos versiones con puente fijo o tremolo Bigsby, bien jazzero y super matón. El cuello tiene el inlay clásico de Gretsch llamado "Alamo" y tiene las pastillas single coil competencia perpetua de las P-90, las facinantes DynaSonic (que Fender uso en su Telesonic, esa lira la tocaba Chetes en Vaquero, drool). Solo hay acabado en negro de esta solida giutarra caoba. Es conmovedor.

Rola y la Saundersina

Durante mucho tiempo cuando la gente (bueno, la gente que sabe de esas cosas) escucha caoba y maple en la misma oración, les viene a la mente el estándard impuesto por Gibson en los 50's con la Les Paul, una guitarra pesada de cuerpo de caoba con una cubierta de maple y pastillas humbuckers (ver el post anterior). Yamaha cambió este estándar con la serie AES que hizo su debut en 2002, una guitarra de contornos modernos pero sin rayar en lo futurista, una hermosa mezcla de tradición, clase y tecnología. Una de mis variaciones favoritas de la AES es la AES620 que muestro en el post. Un instrumento más delgado que la Les Paul y de controles más simples y alineados de modo que cuando se usa las perillas de volumen y tono quedan paralelas al suelo, facilitando su acceso, y bonitas pastillas Seymour Duncan.

Una de las personas que usa este instrumento es Natalia Lafourcade (les muestro fotos de la AES620 de Natalia, detras del sillón, atrás de Rusbel y ejecutada por la talentosa originaria de Xico). Otras versiones muy buenas de esta seria son la AES720, de acabados futuristas y pastillas DiMarzio y la AES920 que es la crema de esta línea, las dos han recibido el premio Platino de Guitar World a la calidad y el diseño, realmente un honor. No teman comprar estas hermosas importaciones koreanas, yo ya les estoy perdiendo el miedo, despues de todo, mi Yamaha RBX260 no me ha fallado en 8 años

Be Freaking Good

Pues lo nuevo de Gibson es la Les Paul BFG. Lo interesante de esta lirita es que es un modelo muy crudo, ¿Cómo que es crudo señor buho? Pues si chicuelos, es crudo porque el maple sobre la caoba no esta acabado ni lijado lo cual permite ver las vetas de la madera completamente, las perillas de madera le dan un toque elegante y el cuello sin marcas de puntos y las maquinarias negras le dan un sentido minimalista. De las pastillas solo me voy a limitar a decir que en vez de un humbucker en el area del cuello se coloco una pastilla single coil P-90, la pastilla tipo single coil mas poderosa en el mercado. Existen tres acabados, trans cherry, trans black y trans gold, la trans black es mi favorita. Me da la impresión de que tocar una de estas guitarras sería como ponerte tu par de jeans mas jodidos, pero que son tus favoritos.

Ibanez es una compañía de origen japonés que surgió en a finales de los años 60, primero empezaron producción con instrumentos que eran réplicas de clásicos originales de Gibson (entre ellas la SG, hermosa guitarra por cierto, Rusbel!). Las copias eran tan baratas pero de una calidad tal que hubo momentos en los que estos intrumentos llegaron a superar la calidad de los originales. Estas guitarras son ahora el deseo de muchos guitarristas, tales como Pat Smear y otros. Ibanez continuó con la producción de instrumentos originales depues de perder una demanda contra la compañía Gibson, por obvias razones. Una gran variedad de artistas de todos los generos musicales utilizan estas guitarras deliciosas. Aquí presento una de las variedades de la serie SA de Ibanez, son instrumentos delgados en las orillas y gruesos hacia el cuello de la guitarra, si se ve el perfil del instrumento es ovalado, lo cual lo hace muy cómodo y facil de tocar. Los cuellos de Ibanez se distinguen por su rapidez y facilidad de ejecución. La SAS36FMTG que presento tiene cualidades extraordinarias, combinaciones de maderas y pastillas que le permiten ir desde tonos metaleros modernos hasta sonidos clásicos, un instrumento extremadamente versatil. Se me antojo una de estas o_O.

Anyone Can Play Guitar

Reminicente de la Gibson Explorer creada en 1957 y aun rockeando en muchas grandes bandas de rock y metal, esta hermosa guitarra ha mantenido sus raíces virtualmente inalteradas... hasta hoy! Ahora con la segunda edición del divertido juego Guitar Hero II, y como diría nuestro valioso gurú Thom Yorke: "anyone can play guitar". Con un delicioso cuello de plástico y pastillas inexistentes esta maquina de destrucción masiva rockeará a través de tu XBox 360 o Sony PS. Cuenta con 5 botones de colores no-identificables (para mí) y maquinarias de afinación sin perillas, lo cual le hace impráctico el uso de cuerdas. Cuenta con una barrita simuladora del movimiento, que creo que a la hora de jugar se debe mover al ritmo de la música, mientras coordinas el movimiento de los botoncillos y de la barra de tremolo que está por demás jocosa. El bum en la foto trae una versión de una Gibson SG (si se lo estaban preguntando). Espero que en el juego vengan rolas de Pantera, The Dears y una de Steve Vai (just for fun). Habrán otras versiones? Otros modelos? No lo se, y no me importa. Baby, let's rock! Be a guitar hero.

El Porqué De Las Cosas

Por qué escribo sobre estas cosas? Que hay de especial con las mentadas guitarras que prácticamente les dedico un blog completo? Por qué no pongo fotos mías o al menos de otras cosas?... Durante la vida he escuchado mucha música y sigo escuchando un montón más de música que jamás habría pensado escuchar, y en la mayoría de las bandas si no es que en casi todas las que escucho, desde el jazz, hasta el metal y todo lo demás siempre tiene, aunque sean mínimos arreglos o grandes riffs y licks, a la guitarra. Y mis amigos musicófilos (what the...!) no me dejarán mentir. Desde bandas guitarrosas como The Dears, hasta trip-hop de Portishead o 8mm siempre llevan por allí una bonita lira.

Y hablando de The Dears y su nuevo disco, es una preciosura. Me preguntó el Raz anoche, regresando de la despedida, cuál guitarra tenía el vocalista de la banda en el video de "Ticket to Immortality"? Es una Epiphone Casino, oh sí! Y en el departamento de las "semihollow-bodied". Una de mis favoritas es la Dot Studio. La Dot Studio es una versión minimalista de la famosa Dot ES-335. Sin marcas de puntos y solo dos controles (volúmen y tono), este hermoso instrumento es sólido y ruge como cualquier otro instrumento de más de 2000usd por tan solo 300usd. Si quieren escuchar este instrumento ser ejecutado, acabo de descubrir que "...And you will know us by the trail of dead..." lo usa en muchas de sus canciones. El Arquetipo

Despues de pasar una semana infernal debido a la subita e inesperada partida de la Golondrina y aguantar las groserías y nacadas de Rivera me siento con un ánimo más calmado a escribir sobre uno de los instrumentos que cambió la música para siempre... la Fender Stratocaster.

El instrumento se ha mantenido virtualmente inalterado desde su creación que en 1954 surgió como una versión "futurista" de la Telecaster, lo que Leo Fender no sabía es que había dado vida a la guitarra más famosa de toda la historia. El instrumento que presento es un reissue de cómo las guitarras de aquel entonces solían lucir; el modelo se llama Fender '50s Stratocaster que viene con el innovador cuello y fretboard de maple que en aquel entonces era un concepto totalmente nuevo que introdujo la Telecaster. El acabado del cuello y los colores son clásicos de la época (mis favoritos son el negro y el two-color sunburst ^_^) así como la maquinaria. El arquetipo de todo lo que vendría después. Dedico este post a mis amigos que me brindaron su apoyo incondicional en estos obscuros y turbulentos momentos. Gracias.

Tenemos Tecnología

La tecnología para fabricar instrumentos hace mas de veinte años era por cierto precaria y tener un buen instrumento era costosísimo por el trabajo que se tenia que invertir en la manufactura de ellos. Ahora, con las bondades de la tecnología, tener un hermoso instrumento de calidad no debe costar más de mil dolares americanos; claro está que si uno desea entrar en un estado de soberbia y suntuosidad y adquirir un instrumento "custom" o "vintage" deberá invertir por lo menos dos mil dolares. La tecnología ha abaratado la construcción de instrumentos y ha aumentado su homogeneidad y calidad en producción. Esta no es la excepción en instrumentos de jazz y cajas huecas o semihuecas. Uno de los ejemplos favoritos para esto es Hagstrom, que cesó su producción en los inicios de los años ochentas y volvió en el invierno de 2005 para impresionar al mundo.

Un modelo hermosisimo es la HJ-600, por solo aproximadamente 650usd. Una caja de jazz con dos humbuckers clasicos modelo HJ50. Los acabados en la madera de maple en el cuello y en el cuerpo son soberbios. Este instrumento tiene el clásico y sobrecogedor cabezal de Hagstrom que le da un toque de elegancia, glamour, hedonismo y poder. Tiene el original truss-rod "H", patentado por Hagstrom que hace que el cuello sea sólido y rígido lo cual permite que la acción del instrumento sea baja y le proporciona una sensación de facilidad de ejecución y rapidez, invención por la cual Hagstrom reclama el título de tener el cuello más rápido del Mundo.

Cuerpo Chico, Infierno Grande

Escuchaba una estacion de radio bien chidita, blugrasscountry.org, y me volvio la nostalgia de los interminables campos de papa y alfalfa, el calor de las plantas respirando, el tumbleweed y las enormes montañas junto a los vastos valles. La música campirana, bluegrass, folk y lo mas moderno como el country son el pan de todos los días. Recuerdo a los viejitos en los porches de su casa tocando el banjo y la mandolina al ver el Sol ocultarse detras de la riviera del Snake River y sobre todo extraño a mi amigo Heavy Duty.

Los mejores sonidos de esta tierra salen de las guitarras Dreadnought de cuerpos enormes (como mi guitarra, para aquellos quien tienen el gusto de conocerla). Además hay otras que son para tocar el lead. Son generalmente conocidas como guitarras de cuerpo chico, o tamaño 00, nomenclatura que dio Gibson originalmente a estos instrumentos.

La que aqui presento es una Epiphone EL-00 que recuerda la forma de antiquisimos instrumentos de hace mas de un siglo. Robert Johnson, un legendario y místico guitarrista de blues tocaba un instrumento similar. Este hermoso instrumento es una maravilla por si mismo y puede entregar brillantes agudos y bajos redondos a pesar de su pequeño cuerpo, un infierno de sonido, y portabilidad especial para esos viajecillos a Boston, NL.

Por Qué El Perro Come Carne y Yo No?

La pregunta del siglo. Por qué el perro come carne y yo no? Por qué no me voy de vacaciones a Dubayy con la Golondra? Por qué no puedo correr por las paredes como el Principe de Persia? Por qué los guitarristas pueden tener una bonita Les Paul Gibson de caoba y los bajistas no? La respuesta a estas y otras preguntas es la misma, porque estoy jodido. Pero al menos una ya está solucionada y todo esto gracias a la noble gente de Gibson, que nuevamente, se han preocupado por dar a sus clientes amantes de las cuatro cuerdas bajos por demás conmovedores. El Bajo Les Paul de Gibson tiene la forma de su hermana guitarra, pero con una escala de 34in, y un cuerpo de caoba con cámaras de sonido (el cuerpo esta parcialmente hueco), para hacer el instrumento más ligero y darle resonancia. Espero poder pronto tener uno de estos e irme de vacaciones con la Golondra a Dubayy y tener una aventura en los Emiratos Árabes como el Principe de Persia, correr por las paredes y comer carne como el perro.

Rolamaster

Grande fue la era en la que la Fender Jaguar rugió en los escenarios a manos de el difunto Kurt Cobain y durante otras eras siendo ejecutada por Bush, Blur y otros muchos más. El instrumento además de su calidad y facilidad de ejecución debido a su por demás corta escala de 24in (una Gibson Les Paul tiene una escala de 24.75in mientras que una Strat tiene una escala de 25.5in, usualmente un bajo tiene una escala de 34in) lo cuál le da una sensación de mayor solotura y rapidez, tiene la particularidad de ser un diseño totalmente diferente a las Strats y Teles. La contraparte barata de Fender, Squier, produce un instrumento similar a las Jaguar y Jazzmaster, la muy chidita Jagmaster (supongo que esto es una contracción de Jaguar y Jazzmaster). Este instrumento tiene la misma escala de 24in. Un cuerpo similar al de sus antecesores (de hecho el cuerpo es mas parecido al de la Jazzmaster y el cabezal al de la Jaguar). Pastillas Humbucking Duncan Designed, y dos acabados especiales. La sencillez del instrumento es acogedora y existe, por lo visto, un culto a la Jagmaster ($250usd), gente que prefiere estas hermosuras por sobre la Jaguar ($1500usd) misma.

Especialidad De La Casa

Cuando se busca calidad en un instrumento muchas veces el precio que se paga no es reflejo de esta característica aunque por regla general se sabe que el precio de un producto esta relacionado en forma directamente proporcional con su calidad. Pero este no siempre es el caso. Siendo fanático de los instrumentos y al encontrarme en las condiciones precarias de un estudiante gusto de buscar guitarras que proporcionen calidad sonora, precisión de ejecución y resistencia en su construcción y acabado sin necesidad de que te saquen un ojo al estilo Pai Mei. Con años de experiencia esta tarea se vuelve sencilla y al ir a la tienda de instrumentos se pueden identificar facilmente si un instrumento esta bien construido o no, sin tener que siquiera posar los dedos sobre él.

Este fue el caso de mi preciosa y ya hace tiempo desaparecida Epiphone Special II. En acabado color vino translucido y herrajes y maquinarias negras esta hermosura era una obra de simple y puro rock. Un cuello sólido y pastillas decentes. Tenía entonación casi perfecta y aunque no se mantenía afinada por mucho tiempo ese problema se hubiera corregido facilmente al cambiar las maquinarias por Grover Tuners. Cuando vendí mi Squier Affinity Strat en sunburst me senti confundido, cuando vendí la Ibanez GAX-70 en color ambar me sentí aliviado. Cuando vendí mi Epi Special II me sentí destrozado. Es un vacío que solo la Golondra puede llenar.

El Bueno, El Malo y El Chingon

Siendo esta mi semana de Washburn (como todos Ud. saben me inclino por una marca de guitarras cada vez) me dispongo a escribir sobre tres bonitos modelos de esta legendaria compañía guitarrera.

Primero El Bueno...una hermosa semihollow, la HB35, que nos recuerda en su hechura a la clásica Gibson ES335, solo que esta no te cuesta un ojo de la cara, con un fino acabado natural y cubierta de maple en flama esta poderosa guitarra sacará lo mejor de tus dedos, las incrustaciones de madre perla en las marcas del cuello en forma de bloques segmentados le dan un aire de elegancia y de "toco en una banda de blues en el café más chido del mundo".

Ahora El Malo...woha! La poderosa EG333, que nos recuerda la era en que Washburn fabricaba guitarras para nuestro querido Maestro Dimebag Darrell. Con Floyd Rose original y acabado en camuflage urbano, este ominoso instrumento habla por si mismo de su actitud "asnomalo" (badass). No tocaréis trova en esta guitarra matona (el decimoprimer mandamiento).

Y por último El Chingón... muchas imitaciones se han hecho del diseño conjunto de Gibson y el Señor Lester Polfuss (Les Paul), un cuerpo sólido de caoba con una cubierta de maple y un solo corte; pero las guitarras de Washburn de cuerpo sólido son únicas y siempre originales, desde la ya desaparecida Serie P de Wahsburn hasta la ahora premiada Serie Idol, Washburn siempre sale a notar en el mundo del cuerpo sólido. La Idol que aquí muestro es la WI67PRO, de cuerpo semisólido con un precioso hoyo de sonido en "f", el famoso y facinante cabezal de 3x3 de Washburn este instrumento es tan bello tocandolo como tan solo viendolo.

Extremo

Volviendo a la bonita tradición laudera de Washburn una compañía de experiencia ancestral contemporanea de Gibson. Su experiencia basada en instrumentos para música folk y en especial ser la propulsora del Delta Blues, Washburn es una marca que muy pocas veces volteamos a ver, porque por muchos años enfocaron su producción a los guitarristas de metal, en lo cual se volvieron extremadamente eficientes, tales como el Maestro Dimebag Darrell de Pantera. En otro de sus rubros Washburn ha sido un gran productor de giutarras acústicas de gran calidad.

Washburn tambien fabrica las guitarras de Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme, "More Than Words"? ya saben de quien hablo?, bueno, no importa) quien tiene su propia linea distintiva. La más sencilla de éstas es una de las mejores compras de calidad/dinero que se pueden encontrar en el mercado de las guitarras eléctricas. La N1 tiene un hermoso cuerpo de Paduak acabado en mancha satin y un cuello rápido sobremanera. El instrumento es de una simpleza elegante y esta construida en forma robusta. El cabezal invertido de la un look por demás candente y sus poderosas pastillas Washburn hacen de esta guitarra una delicia de los dioses del rock. Sus controles son simples, un solo control de volumen y seleccion de pastillas. Estos instrumentos dejan babeando a otras guitarras en el mismo intervalo de precio y soñando en algo que jamás llegarán a ser.

Meteorock

Studying a Masters Degree related to Chemical Engineering can sometimes be a serious pain in the buttocks, but rarely we recieve a course that lets us have a glance at the beauty of life. Right now I'm taking one of those courses, named Meteorological Aspects of Air Pollution. Comes to pass that Dr. Jonathan Khal, who is imparting these series of lectures is, as I am, a fond guitar aficionado. He owns an obscure guitar, hardly ever heard of, the Gibson ES-175 Steve Howe model based on the 1964 Gibson ES-175 played by this guitar virtuoso.

As the people from Gibson say about this guitar: "...The Steve Howe signature ES-175 celebrates the achievements of the man who elevated rock guitar to an art form. As a member of the English band Yes, Steve's tasteful, eclectic guitar parts helped define a new style of music...". So, if you happen to like progressive acts such as Dream Theater or Steve Vai, have in mind that they owe a big deal to guitar master Steve Howe.

His signature guitar is as elegant as his sound. You may notice in the picture the vintage sunburst finish which accentuates the purity of the instrument's design. Nickel hardware makes the guitar look solid and strong. The maple/poplar full-hollow body nicely catches those elusive fat lows coupled with bright and round highs yielding an explosive jazz sound. A big ol' toggle switch selects between the '57 classic humbucking pickups. The Nashville TOM bridge and 175 tailpiece evoke an era when luthiers sincerily cared about taste in guitar making. Kudos go to Gibson for making such a nice instrument. If someone asked me if this guitar is stable, I would have to answer: "compare its temperature to the temperature of the sorrounding air". Adieu.

Los Pixies

En la búsqueda de guitarras acústicas, encontré una especial para niñas. Los cuerpos de guitarras dreadnought son enormes, pesados y agotadores de tocar, así que Daisy Rock tomó cartas en el asunto al crear una guitarra quasi-dreadnought con un cuerpo más pequeño pero conservando el robusto sonido al dejar la escala (la escala es la distancia entre el puente y la nuez, lo blanquito donde se sostienen las cuerdas en el cabezal) intacta, o sea, de escala grande. El resultado es una guitarra muy comoda con un sonido grueso y redondo. El nombre de esta chulada que presento en rosa es la Daisy Rock Pixie. Con el clásico cabezal de Daisy y toques por demás femeninos. Así que para todas las niñas que gustan del campo corran a comprar una Pixie, ¡ahora! Que genial, ¿no?

La Herencia

Hace algunos años, en 1984, como pasa con tantas compañías, Gibson dejó sus primeras instalaciones en Kalamazoo, Michigan para mudar toda su producción a sus legendarias fabricas en Nashville, Tennessee. No dejaron los edificios únicamente, dejaron a sus empleados y expertos "luthiers" atrás. Estos genios desempleados, cuya única habilidad era construir guitarras, decidieron continuar con el legado que les fue dejado, con la herencia otorgada. Y en aquellas mismas instalaciones nació The Heritage. Con una calidad mejorada por la experiencia y con la libertad de crear sus propios modelos, The Heritage ha ganado muchas veces el Festival NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants).

Reminiscentes de sus raíces, los instrumentos Heritage tienen un fuerte reflejo de Gibson pero son únicas en su propio derecho. En este post presento una millenium standard ultra de cuerpo semihueco, hermosísima ganadora de un premio NAMM. Si tan solo alguien me heredara una fabrica de guitarras y el "know-how". *sigh* =(

Cuarto de siglo

En dos semanas entraré en lo que posiblemente sea la segunda de tres partes de mi vida, habré cumplido un cuarto de siglo. Hace veinticinco años la Guerra Fría aún amenazaba con destruir el mundo, las baterías electrónicas estaban en boga en todas las bandas (aún peor que una guerra nuclear) y surgió MTV, el canal que destruiría la música para siempre. Sin embargo un estilo permanecía inmune a todas estas cosas, el folk.

Volviendo al tema de las mandolinas. Estos son instrumentos que, hasta hace siete años, eran de buena calidad, ahora la calidad ha menguado sobremanera. Actualmente toco una mandolina que era de mi hermana, aproximadamente fue comprada hace unos treinta años, y aún cuando la caja está rota (la cual arreglé con cinta de aislar) y las maquinarias están arruinadas, todavía se puede percibir un sonido agradable, difícil de encontrar, pero agradable. He estado en búsqueda de la mandolina perfecta para mí. En mis sueños, me veo ejecutando una mandolina de estilo F, pero son caras y quiero pulir mi habilidad con un instrumento más modesto. Encontré una mandolina de estilo A marca Fender, pero mis proveedores de instrumentos en internet no tienen permiso de Fender para enviarme instrumentos a Mexico (¡malaya!). Una marca que si tienen permiso de exportar es Washburn, y la mandolina presentada en este post es de esa hechura.

Es un instrumento peculiar, de estilo A, con un hoyo de sonido ovalado, hermoso, que hace memoria de los clásicos instrumentos florentinos. Y hablando de florentino, el cabezal está diseñado con ese mismo estilo, el cuello es sólido y firme. El acabado que me gustaría tener en la mía sería el negro, aunque el azul presentado en la foto se ve genial. Solo para que estén seguros, no pienso tocar rolas rabonas de estudiantina. Me enfocaré en el bonito estilo grass, bluegrass y folk que tanto me gusta.

Unplugged

Muchos músicos o personas que se hacen llamar "artistas" esconden sus atrocidades mediante software y complejas consolas de grabación. Durante mis cortos trece años de experiencia musical he aprendido que el reto no se encuentra en pararte en un gran escenario sino en cantar para un pequeño grupo de personas y tocar, como lo llamamos, unplugged. Pero no un unplugged rabón como los de MTV, donde todo está super ecualizado, sino un unplugged en una fiesta, reunión o "carneasada"; tu instrumento y tú, solos. El corazón desnudo y expuesto.

Mi guitarra acústica, un regalo de mi tío cuando cumplí doce años, es particularmente difícil y agotadora de tocar. Es una Samick de forma dreadnought, usada particularmente en el estilo country. Este cuerpo de guitarra tiene una voz profunda y tonos redondos (en mi mente suenan redondos). Una de las satisfacciones de mi vida es esa, yo se que no soy un gran cantante, pero si un buen guitarrista, y allí pongo mi esfuerzo, en mis manos; mi voz solo se acopla a mi guitarra y sale lo que traigo dentro, si alguna vez me has escuchado tocar, has visto mi rostro, y me entiendes.

Las guitarras estilo dreadnought fueron creadas por C.F. Martin en 1930. Si has pensado en una guitarra acústica, el mejor sonido en el que podrías soñar sería una C.F. Martin. El único problema es que para comprar la Martin más pedorra tendrías que desembolsar 1000usd. Fender hace buenas guitarras acústicas y a un precio razonable. Un modelo que me encanta es el que les presento, la Fender Malibu SCE. Ésta es diferente porque si observan, tiene el cabezal de una guitarra Fender Jaguar eléctrica, lo cual le da un contraste hermoso con respecto a las construcciones convencionales. Está toda hecha de caoba fina y es de un cuerpo más delgado que el de una dreadnought regular. Cuenta además con un corte para accesar más facilmente los agudos más altos. Que más decir sobre esto de tocar "al fresco"; ¡cuidate Bob Dylan quiaite voy!

Pasto Azul

Pues ya se acabo el cochino semestre, y puedo publicar con más tranquilidad en mi blog. En vista de que todos mis compañeros de blogs estan escribiendo en el idioma celestial, lo haré yo tambien, de todos modos nadie ajeno a nuestro circulo social visita estas páginas.

Este fin de semana me entró la fiebre "folk", haciendome recordar lo hermosa que es la vida en el campo y el olor del estiércol fresco por las mañanas, las duras jornadas bajo el sol cortando el trigo y las papas, y por supuesto, con el brazo dentro de una vaca, hasta el hombro. Escuchando las notas del genio Bob Dylan llamó a mi atención los sonidos extravagantes y poderosos de la mandolina. Generalmente relacionamos a este instrumento con musica pedorra de las estudiantinas, en una de las cuales toque durante la secundaria, y no me permitieron tocar la guitarra porque ya habia muchos guitarristas, ni la mandolina porque era para niñas, así que fui relegado a la tarea de tocar el pandero y ser el puñetas que echaba los gritillos.

Durante mi estancia en Idaho, un hombre, que no sé si sigue con vida, me enseñó las maravillas de la musica campirana, el folk y el bluegrass, mi mentor, Heavy Duty, como se hacía llamar. Con sus enormes manos y gigantescos dedos tenía la habilidad de tocar en los pequeños trastes de la mandolina, hacer vibrar las duras cuerdas del banjo y sacar de la guitarra electrica sonidos que jamás habría imaginado.

La mandolina tiene varias formas, la forma A, en forma de pera, que es la que generalmente se utiliza, con un hoyo de sonido ovalado o con hoyos "f" como los del violín. Y una forma más extraña y menos conocida, la forma F, que es la que observan en este post. La forma F es generalmente usada en el grass y en el folk. Esta mandolina es una Gibson original de 1929 con un solo usuario, valuada en 80,000usd. Es una obra de arte por si misma y se encuentra en excelentes condiciones. Pienso comprarme una de éstas pero mas modesta y en forma A. Por el precio de este precioso instrumento podría comprarme un yate, o al menos un buen auto.

I don´t know why, but seems like this really bad TV show is in a boom. I'm speaking of course of LOST, the media phenomena that has millions of people chained to lenghty exposure of radiation from their televisions. And going back to the series, the brit junkie, Charlie, whom we remember as Merry in LOTR plays a Fernandes Atlas in Candy Apple Red. I had quite a kick thinking that this bass was a Lakland 4-94 but it was not. Fernandes is a good company, don't take me wrong, Billy Corgan used to play a Fernandes Retrorocket. A Bass of Miles

And you might be wondering, who in the heck is Darryl Jone s? In my hometown Monterrey we have a saying: "ni en su casa lo conocen" (they don't even know him in his own house). But behold, he has played with some of the greatest names in music: Miles Davis, Sting, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and at this moment he's touring with The Rolling Stones. Yea mates, the very same Miles Davis whom we love. In his own words: "My approach to all music is break it down cut away the excess get back to the fundamentals. I play rock-solid bass. That's what I love to do." And he does it with a beautiful Lakland Darryl Jones Signature model available in both US and Skyline series (check the "Dark Star In The Land" post to learn the difference). This bass is like an extra curved jazz-bass thing. Is very ripe and looks solid as rock. I really dig the block inlays. Lately I've been wondering, why do I like Laklands more than Fenders? What is the psychological mechanism that works in my head? And it all comes down to quality and performance. Lakland is a small company and therefore they pay extra attention to detail, they keep that luthier feel, this means an extra cost, but there you have a unique instrument, that you won't find in any store, something special made with love. And that is the kind of guitar shop I'd like to own.

Backer On A Baker

Well, I'm sorry but despise all the years we've know it is not a "baker" but a "backer". Yes, I'm speaking of course of the quintessential guitar maker Rickenbacker that are now celebrating their 75th anniversary. The Rickenbacker International Corporation (RIC) grew out of the first company founded for the sole purpose of creating and manufacturing fully electric musical instruments and amplifiers-the Los Angeles-based Electro String Instrument Corporation. Founded in 1931 by Adolph Rickenbacker and George D. Beauchamp, this pioneering firm produced "Rickenbacker Electro Instruments", the first modern electric guitars. RIC's history now spans 75 years in business on the leading edge of music trends that have changed popular culture forever. Dark Star In The Land

Sometimes I think of getting a new guitar, well, that happens to me on a daily basis, mostly every five minutes. And people would say: "Yeah Rola, get a Fender bass a Precision or a Jazz Bass, they're very nice and you like'em a lot". The truth is, I really like them but I always want to have something different, something nobody else would have, something unique and peculiar. And want to do my dear web visitor? I like those Fender shapes, but I'd like more features and a more peculiar bass. And these characteristics are met by an almost obscure, unknown brand, the nice and beautiful Lakland. But this brand provides classic Fender-ish shapes, new original shapes, awesome pickups and electronics, and construction quality most companies have been dreamong about for decades.

The first time I saw a Lakland bass being used was by Wilco's John Stirratt, playing a Bob Glaub (p-bass look alike) signature model equipped with the original Dark Star pickup, that I only have seen in Lakland instruments as a given factory option/upgrade. Also Lakland has a Skyline series which would be the cheapo asian made versions, but the thing is that those Korean made basses sound, look and feel exactly the same as a US made ones, no difference, only that the US ones are mostly hand made and have extra features, being this a great asset to the Lakland name. In a few words, if I wanted a Fender bass with the features and quality offered by the cheapest Lakland bass I would have to pay twice the money.

Afraid I Might Lose Her

These days I have been really depressed and have not written much, I miss my old lady, the love of my life... and in this hiatus of sadness and LOST-watching madness I've been listening to a band that makes me sad and sore, Deftones, and as they sing "When Girls Telephone Boys" and "Pink Maggit" I wonder. As Stephen Carpenter said: "...most people think our songs are about being angry and stomping, but most of them are really songs about love...". And how does Mr. Stephen Carpenter deliver such moody tones? What is the palette of this guitar Artist? Well, that would be without shadow of a doubt the ESP Stef Carpenter Signature Model. For those of you who don't know much about ESP or guitars whatsoever. ESP has built guitars for a lot of musicians, mostly metal, hardcore, trash and sorts of badass players. ESP has a sub-brand named LTD that allows people to buy high quality instruments without the high price. Believe me, if you have an ESP you won't be playing Hanson's Mmm Bop in it, thus the Prince of Darkness comes after you (c'mon people I'm not speaking about Satan, I'm speaking of George Bush). By the way, LOST sucks, I'm almost done with the first season (in a two-day session). I miss you Fabs.

Midi Chlorians

Squier is a brand name that most people relate to cheapo asian guitars. The truth is that Squier, a subsidiary of Fender, has been manufacturing guitars, based on Fender original models, since the early eighties and has improved a whole lot in their manufacturing quality and also has developed their own unique designs. In the words of Mr. Manny Stewart: "... I play a Squier. I say that without hesitation, proudly, and perhaps a little defiantly. A lot of Squier players will say 'I play a Strat' or 'a Tele' or 'Showmaster' and leave the Squier part out. Why? Because they're embarrassed they don't have the Fender name on the headstock. I think it's time to speak up for Squier. They make great guitars and sell them for ridiculously low prices. If anything, Squier players should feel smart for having gotten such a good deal... Sure, the Fender name is big, loaded with history, allure, and all of the cachet that goes along with being a legend. If you can afford an American-made Fender, you should get one. But even if you are excessively value conscious or have budget constraints, you don't have to give up on the notion of having a real Fender. Squier instruments are real Fenders and you can afford one..."

I once owned a Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster, in a two tone sunburst and believe me, I miss the guitar, it was more reliable than my Ibanez and held its tune much better. The guitar player in my band owns two of those and he smashed the crap out of them and are still working well. And to prove it once more I'd like to talk about the Squier Precision Bass Special, that comes, in one of its options, in a beautiful satin pewter color with matching headstock, a Jazz bass pickup in the bridge position and a Precision bass split pickup. I recently found a video of Danny Wood, bassist for ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead..., at the end of a show, trying to destroy his Squier Bass (proving that professionals play this "cheap" guitars) and failing in the attempt. He also plays one of these basses. The moral of this story? Badass tone, kick ass construction: A great affordable entry/pro level instrument. I won't be smashing a 2000usd bass on the floor... well I would't smash this one either anyway.

A friend of mine asked me to provide some info in any of Radiohead's Thom Yorke guitar gear. I really like his Custom Telecaster, it's one of my favorite instruments to see. This instrument was mostly played during the OK Computer period, though it has a lot of sticker in it. The ’72 Telecaster Deluxe features many of those options, including an alder or ash body (depending on finish), a C-shaped maple neck, bullet truss rod, ’70s vintage hardtail strings-through Strat bridge, three-bolt neckplate, ’70s Strat headstock, two Wide Range humbucking pickups, traditional three-way switching and four skirted amp knobs. Luthierie is fonder in some countries than others. One of these countries is Spain, they practically developed the guitar luthier concept with the calssical flamenco guitar. As a friend of mine once told me -Barcelona, smells of guitar, everything in common life goes around the guitar-. Jerzy Drozd is a Luthier company that are specialized in bass guitar crafting. Jose Tirado Lacruz, Xavier Lorita Gomez, Ramon Armengol, Jerzy Drozd, and Kitxa the cat devote their lives, time and talent to bass building. They develop some of the most beautiful, elegant, innovative, fine, awesome basses. In their own words: "...Our approach to bass building is very simple: for us it's a science, meaning high precision, high-tech components. Also it's a fine artisan work, meaning special attention to every detail and finally, it's and Art...". And that's really what these instruments are, an outstanding piece of Art that could be displayed in a museum.

The Barcelona model is their newest model. Everything from the pickups from to the tunning machines is custom made. This is a neckthrough spanish cedar semihollow body instrument, made with the same wood used to build flamenco guitars. The strings go through the body improving resonance and sustain. Wooden pickup covers and an elegant hole in one of the horns. A wooden bridge and knobs. I don't have words to describe this work, would be unrespectful and I dare not describing with words such a beautiful beautiful guitar.

I've been making music for a long time. And my early memories of music come from home, when I was three or four, sitting by my older sister when she was performing Beethoven's sad "Sonata No 8. Patética", and feeling the vibrations of the black vertical piano, the smell of the wood, a Yamaha. And would it be a coincidence of life or a mathematical fact of the Universe but my favorite bass is my black Yamaha RBX260 that I just equipped with DiMarzio's Model P. I've seen Yamaha pianos played in very fancy places and Yamaha guitars in places not as civilized. Yamaha's instruments are hard-working horses and yet deliver delicate sounds and aural textures. From a flute to a drum set. I really dig Yamaha's stuff.

Yamaha just developed a new technology, named Alternative Internal Resonance (A.I.R.). Classically it has been thought that a solid body guitar will sound better if the body wood is hard and heavy, and this is where the AIR alternative comes in. The AIR technology uses a lightweight wood core literally sandwiched between a harder, heavier wood on both the front and back of the guitar's body. Special sound tubes pass through the body so that string vibrations normally resonating only the guitar's top are transmitted through the entire body (like the sound post of a violin). Therefore, the entire body structure vibrates and the tone is shaped by the hard top and back. AIR construction creates a full, powerful, and resonant tone with distinctive presence and body that are truly unique. It's like having a hollow body guitar filled with very very dense fluid. C'mon, simple, basic physics, why did not anybody think of this before?

This guitar comes with two special humbuckers, and get a load of this, it doesn't have tone controls; you only control your sound by selecting the blend of the pickups, done with a special knob of graphic color selection (like a color light), not a common switch. Pure minimalism and elegance. It also comes with a special bridge and hardware. Very futuristic lined accents and headstock, like watching a 60's movies with people colonizing the moon in the 80's. Gibson has been making guitars for a while now, and one of their lightest and more interesting instruments is the Gibson SG, with its evil look and slim body. Many people play and have played the Gibson Les Paul SG guitar, but what about us? What about bass players? We also have feelings, like Thom Yorke, Carlos Santana, and even Angus Young. Don't we like the SG? Don't we deserve one too? Thanks for answering my plea. Gibson is producing a classic once more. Classic dual-pickup SG-style bass from the 1960's has returned as the SG Reissue. Vintage-style TB Plus bass humbucker and mini bass humbucker in the bridge position. For those who did not understand the previous post about the Tele-Strat hybrid I'll show you a Fender Telecaster at your left and a Fender Stratocaster at your right to help you comprehend the relevance of the piece discussed. The Tele came first on 1946 by Mr. Leo Fender, then a revolutionary "Tele" was designed in 1954 as a futuristic version of the beloved guitar, it was named the Stratocaster. The thing is that it came out so well that it's been around for 52 years. This two babes have been praised and used by almost every musician who plays guitar, as Mr. David Riddle (of NBT) said about the Strat: "...It's the de facto standard. Fender is celebrating their 60th aniversary, and seems like they have gone senile. Introducing the Fender Closet Classic Tele/Strat Hybrid LTD, built by Custom Shop master builder Chris Flemming. Just for those who are wondering, "What the heck is a closet classic?". Well, Fender Custom Shop's vintage guitar reissues are built in three different categories. First, the New Old Stock (NOS), built as if the guitar was discovered in a controled warehouse after many years, never played and showing no signs of age or wear. Second, the Closet Classic, like finding a vintage guitar in a yard sale that's been stashed in a closet, worn a bit, yellowed with age, finish cracks that are typical of an instrument exposed to years of humidity and temperature variations. And Third, the Relic, shows wear and tear from years of heavy use, nicks, scratches, worn finish, rusty hardware, aged plastic parts, looks, feels and plays like it's taken the punishment of many long nightclub hours through many years.

This Fender Closet Classic Tele/Strat Hybrid LTD comes with a Telecaster body but with a Stratocaster's top mounted jack, pickguard, electronics and pickup configurations and what makes it look so rad, a Stratocaster's neck and matching color headstock with vintage tunning machines. Only 100 of these were made, and probably they are already sold. How much are we willing to pay for one? Will we have to wait 60 years to save enough money? I hope not.

Sharp Shapes

There was a recent addition to the Washburn guitar family, the Bantam series, released on January 2006, with sleek body shapes, and a radical headstock and an extended neck tenon of uneven shape to increase body contact surface area, which results in a better sustain of the instrument. Also it sported a new headstock style, same shape, but with a matching-color plastic plate covering part of the headstock and leaving some wood exposed, giving it a futuristic and cool look. But, is it really that radical? Is this sharp shape really that new? We'll have to look into the dark realms of our minds and guitar archives. And the answer is, No. The first time I spotted a new Yamaha RBX 774 was in July 2002 in a Yamaha catalog, it was not display as a product in the catalog but it was in some pictures of it, being held by Taproot's bass player Philip Lipscomb. It had the same shape of the Bantam bass I already described, the same body with sharp cut borders, even the same pickup configuration, just some changes in the horns and in the bridge, but the concept being kept the same. And this rises the question, why is quintessential guitar maker, Washburn, copying body shapes and headstock concepts from a japanese company? I'm not saying this is bad, but this speaks ill of the creativity of the design department of Washburn. I'd buy the Bantam BB4 anytime if available , I think is a good bass, both basses play very well and have unique tones, and that's good, sound identity was not touched but aesthetics tell us a different story. The Yamaha RBX 774 was already discontinued last year. Did Washburn think we would forget about Yamaha's design? I dunno. Probably they did and thought this idea was fresh and new. Benchmarking is everywhere.

I think is time we discussed something about guitar construction, in case you read this blog. There are mainly three kinds of guitar construction: bolt-on neck, set net and through neck. A bolt-on neck is the cheapest construction, both in cost and sound, a neck bolted to the body with three, four or more screws. A set neck is more expensive and has more sustain and a richer tone, the neck is glued to the body by mortise-tenon, like a violin. And finally a through neck, where the neck is actually a part of the body and it goes thru it, givin' infinite sustain and a superb tone, usually making this kind of instruments very expensive, such as a Rickenbacker and other guitars.

Since 1883, the Chicago based Washburn Guitars has been building quality instruments for all sorts of musicians, from Derek Trucks, Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt to the late Pantera's Dimebag Darrell. I found a bass built by them, the Taurus T24 and T25 (five strings). These basses resemble the Spanish Jerzy Drozd's Obsession Basic in their body shape but unlikely the Iberian Company this bass is about ten times less the price, and actually very cheap for a neck through bass but without compromising tone. Roughly 300usd in its street price, the T24 delivers rich sustain and beautiful sound. It has passive electronics, a stained mahogany body, multi laminate neck and grover bass tuners. I really like the "bunny ear" long horn. The looks and performace will cut through your soul.

The Fastest Top Secret

Sometimes the secret to sweet tone, that holy grial of musicians does not lie upon an expensive piece of equipment but in an unknown, and sometimes unexpensive instrument. Such is my case with my Dano Rumor Bass, Ed O'Brien with his hidden Squier guitar, Joe Satriani with his Kramer piece of crap, and many, many more. And on this list we can see one of the most creative minds in the guitar department, Pat Smear, whom you will remember from the Nirvana's Unplugged Album and from the Foo Fighters, whose taste for clothes was as weird as his taste for guitars; besides his Gibson Barney Kessels he faved a brand that was certainly unknown, obscure and rarely seen, the Swedish based Hagström, that gave him his peculiar tone. And digging more in this brand we'll find out that it was also used by Elvis Presley, Frank Zappa and even Jimi Hendrix (maybe you already knew, I didn't). Well, anyway, Hagstrom was founded in 1958 and ceased operation on 1983, which made this guitars highly desired. Also back in the 70's there was a boom of guitar copies, which were cheap but their sound could be compared to those guitars they were copying, and you could find Ibanez's Les Pauls and all sorts of asian copies, with their consequent lawsuit, and therefore this guitars were a wanted madness, people went mental over them and their tone, also loved by Smear. The Hagstrom legend came back in 2006 with new and old models, all of them cool in shape and sound and finding a new horde of playing fans. The shape of the body in some models is everything but orthodox. I'll realy like them, specially the headstock, for me the headstock shape is most important in the aesthetics of a guitar, is like dating a super fit yet butt-ugly model, is just not right.

Going back to the Hagstrom chat, the nice Hagstrom Super Swede, that gives an air of Les Paulesque style with its singlecut but this fine babe is far from being a Les Paul, for good. 45mm mahogany back with a 10mm (I love metric system) maple veneer. A set mahogany neck, which is claimed to be The fastes neck on planet Earth. Hagstrom big ol' unique tuners 18:1. Hagstrom custom 58 humbuckers. Resinator freatboard. Three-way pickup toggle, two tone knobs, two volume volume, and a mini-toggle coil tap switch. You'll get a super guitar for no more than 600usd. Vintage yet with a modern crunch. These are sugar all the way. Diabetics, restrain yourselves.

One of the most innovative advances in the realm of the bass guitar has been the carbon fiber neck. From that day in 1976 when bass-playing rocket scientist Geoff Gould (he was a carbon fiber designer on the Voyager probe) first wondered, “What if …” the electric bass has had a different sound. The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh played one of the first carbon fiber-necked basses and from that point forward, some of the most accomplished and creative bassists in the world have played a Modulus instrument. From players like Alphonso Johnson, David Ellefson and Flea, to masters like Oteil Burbridge, Mike Gordon and Me‘Shell NdegéOcello. And a most outstanding player, Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament. To this day, Modulus Quantum basses are made using the same aerospace “hand layup” process as in the beginning. Each neck is still hand laminated with layers of carbon fiber “pre-preg” and cured in a Modulus autoclave. The distinctively spacey exterior layer of carbon fiber is known around the shop as KLD or “a thousand (k) ladies dancing.” This artistic touch has been a Modulus trademark for over 15 years. In 1996, Modulus president Rich Lasner designed the Genesis neck system that takes advantage of carbon fiber’s extremely high strength and the sonic benefits of lightweight tone woods, woods so light that would not be able to stand the tension applied by the strings. Rich’s carbon fiber skeleton supports the string tension and the tone woods give the neck shape and controlled resonance. When you first pick up a Genesis instrument, you’ve got to look closely to see the carbon fiber. But play one note and you’ll hear it for sure. While both systems deliver the benefits of carbon fiber construction, each has subtle differences in tone. Quantum instruments tend to be brighter, with an extended harmonic mix. Genesis instruments tend to be warmer, with a greater fundamental pitch focus.

And with this cultural refreshment I'll now talk about the Modulus Vintage J Bass. This bass is inspired in the shape of a Fender Jazz bass, but the construction is quiet different. The standard options for this bass are as follow. This bass may come in both options, a Quantum KLD neck or a Genesis neck for a warmer tone. 21 frets in a composite fingerboard and a 34in scale. Routed alder body. Tortoiseshell, black or white pickguard. Equipped with Dunlop straplocks. It comes with passive Bartolini pickups. Some upgrades come with active eq's and electronics (Bartolini, Villex and Aguilar), different body woods, flame and quilt maple tops, chechen finguerboards, or no-pickguard-rear-routed electronics. There is also a Genesis 5 string version with fancy woods. The important thing here is the neck, you could put a bullet there and it would bounce right back to your face. It's impervious to dents, cracks, moisture and heat, allowing it to keep its sound throughout the years. The Genesis is subtle to those things but there are people like me, who certainly love the sound of an aging neck. You'll se that the Genesis neck is a clear wood with a dark stripe in it (that would be the carbon fiber core. This instruments are not as expensive as its Quatum Bass or Flea Bass brethren, but they still are fairly pricy, we're speaking here of some $1500usd at least, but they are worth it. The only bad thing about this solid babes is that if you are involved in an argument with your old lady and this is the closest thing around, the bass ain't gonna break, you will x_X.

I found this while surffing the www. It's a really cool guitar shredding lesson created and preformed by finnish animator/composer Mika Tyyskä. This was formerly a thesis project for the Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design. Here I leave you Mika and Mr. Fastfingers shredding. Mika bears a nice sunburst stratocaster with shell pickguard, incredible how versatile Strats can be. The animation's finger techniques and fretboard animations are very accurate to real life. Line 6 began to be famous among musicians for their very useful POD, an effect processor and amp simulator, for guitars introduced in year 2000, later they produced a version for bass, being this even more useful, handy and reliable. Then they began to manufacture the Variax, a guitar so revolutionary that people did not know what to believe, it did not have no pickups ahoy! Instead it had a piezo pickup in the bridge and its own circuitry for guitar simulation, you could get from a nylon acoustic to a resonator, a jazz box or even a Fender Tele, in a few words, you could have a bunch of guitars, the ones you have always dreamed having, but have not been able to afford. And well, off course, where is the production line for the most important musician in a band (I mean the bass player)? Line 6 tought of this and they manufactured the beautiful Line 6 Variax Bass 700 and 705 (five strings). With this baby you can get up to 24 diferent basses and that's beside the tone knob. I particularly like the thumb rest and heastock design. Maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Alder body. Digital I/O RJ45 jack and regular guitar cable jack. The Variax Bass Tone control is split into two separate knobs. The smaller knob on top controls Treble and the large one on the bottom controls Bass, and it is contextual of the bass selected. There is a blend, mic position, pickup position. The master volumne knob is also a push-pull selector for the bass model you want. You can get virtually any sound you want. Check out the Line 6 Variax Bass you'll be surprised of the miracle of math, yeah, I forgot to tell you, the developers of these instruments spent quiet a long time getting the sound waves and patters and developing mathematical models of the sound and character of the different basses to simulate their respective sounds.

Now, to the bottom line. The opinion on this bass is, well, divided. I've read comments saying it's the greatest human achievement, and others saying it's the doom of mankind made instrument. I've heard people praising its simulation quality, and others cursing it. I've written people about it and some say its construction will last longer than Stonehenge and others saying it breaks within hours of getting out of the box. So there is only one true way to find out. But until I get me one of those, kudos go to Line 6 Variax Bass 700 developing team for trying.

Rocking Penguin

Badtz Maru (born 1 April 1993, according to my contacts) has a dream of greatness and a badass attitude. And to honor that attitude Fender came up with an instrument for rude bassists. Though it may look girlish (probably because it is for rocking girls) this is a very macho bass, inspired in the Fender Squier Bronco bass construction the Squier Badtz Maru Bronco bass features a nice c-shape one piece maple neck (with skunk stripe) and fretboard, it has one special design single coil pickup, also found in the regular Bronco Bass but this one has a black cover instead. Amongst the special features we can find a Badtz Maru pickguard, rear routed control cavity, knurled chrome dome control knobs, Badtz Maru artwork in the back of the body and an engraved Squier neckplate. This is a short-scale 30in bass, which makes it just right for small people or for musicians that want to explore a not as ballsy sound as a long 34in scale. The single pickup gives this bass a brighter character and sound, in addition to the maple neck and shorter scale. This is a very nice well crafted little instrument. Let's get real, I won't be playing this at a biker's bar but heck yeah those bikers will think the bass is cute and will blow me a kiss. Go ahead and kick some butts with this penguin.

About a year ago I had my first glance at the Mac World with the infamous iPod, it was new, radical and portable, 10GB of musical bliss; I lost my first iPod in a flood. Now I have a new one, 20GB and clickwheel thingy and can see many of my guitar pics in it (and also of my girlfriend). I have this friend who has guided me through the way of learning the mac world. Four months ago I bought my first Mac computer, a rough and hardworking iBook G4. The first thing I used in it was, off course, Garage Band, a software so powerful and easy to use that you'll find yourself making songs in less than you can take your guitar out of the case.

I got me an iControl, a device crafted by M-Audio, it is a piece of hardware that works as an interface for Garage Band, exclusively. It has all of the controls you see in the Garage Band display and the response is quick and efficient. If you know how to use Band, you already know how to use iControl. Most important, I order this product from Music-123 in Indiana and I had it in my hands and plugged to the computer in 5 days, cool, eh? The iControl is built with thought bend to the musicians alredy using or going to use Band in a live setup, and also at home, it makes things so much more simple, and allows you to do things that you would not be able to do with a mouse. It is class compliant, MIDI accesible and stuff. It is very light, you won't notice you are carrying the thing. I'm glad i bought it and I'm lookinf forward to buy some more devices and software from M-Audio. In a few words, it was designed by some serious geek out there who digs Garage Band. I thank such a geek!

The Gibson company is known for making some of the best instuments in the market, yet they are pricy and unfortunately, here in MTY, very hard to find. Their trademark guitar, a solid body maple top over mahogany back has defined the sound of rock deities and of whole generations, they called it, The Les Paul in honor of musician Lester William Polfuss (born 1915). Back in 1958 the Gibson company introduced the ES-335, a double-cutaway, semi-hollow, thin-bodied electric guitar, the same year that they released the Flying V and Explorer. Though the V and Explorer attracted attention for their unusual body shapes, the ES-335 was actually a more radical innovation because it was the first commercially produced solid/hollowbody hybrid, featuring a solid block of wood inside of the body flanked by two hollow body wings. This Semihollow construction has been faved by many musicians, from B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Blink 182's Tom DeLonge (sounding grotesque to pronounce these names together in the same blog, even in the same year). Here are B.B. King's Lucille, whom I will post more about in the future, and Tom DeLonge's signature model.

Anyway, after a little historic background I give you the new Gibson Vegas Standard, a new semihollow body that well resembles the really hard to find and very expensive Triny Lopez model (played by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl). Unlike most semihollows it features a tuning machines six-in-a-side headstock profile, more likely to be found on Strats and Teles. This is a mahogany back and sides axe with a maple top. '57 classic pickups. And a heavy mahogany neck, ebony fretboard with beautiful dimond shaped inlays. I show you the standard version with chrome hardware (which I like a lot more than gold), also available in a more fancy version the Vegas Roller, with gold hardware. I hope you like it. I Do.

Something Borrowed, Something New

Congratulations to Fender on their 6oth Anniversary. I send my best wishes to Leo Fender, thank you for your guitars in Fender and other companies. I was looking for wiring diagrams for a Precission Bass and found this brand new stuff from Fender. The Fender's unique Jaguar Bass. There have been several kinds of basses from these makers throughout the years but this one is special. Resembling the long loved guitar of many greats in music, the elusive Jaguar, from which we can hear such tunes from Nirvana's Milk It to Blur's Coffee and TV. The alder body comes in cool Black or Hot Rod Red finishes, with a thin, fast one-piece C-shaped maple neck (matching headstock on Hot Rod Red model). The rosewood fingerboard has aged block position markets, and the roar pours forth from two Jazz Bass pickups with an active/passive pickup system and series/parallel switching, just the Jaguar way. So incredibly cool—Fender should’ve thought of this years ago! Way too cool!

Behold, el Dano!

This beauty is a Danelectro Rumor Bass. It was made in the year 2001 by its serial number authentication. It's a four string solid beauty that rocks and rocks. It's black sparkle and features and off waiste body shape with a double cutaway. It's a very very light instrument with a solid maple neck and rosewood fretboard with jumbo frets. It has a split pbass pickup style, a passive circuitry and it has a beautiful built in chorus effect. Tone and volume knobs. It has those big ol' elephant ear tunning machines. I fixed it some Schaller straplocks. I've played this beauty and it has been ever reliable. I've beaten some badass gangsters with it, and they liked it and asked for more. It rumbles on, the sound is clear and sparky, like it's finish. Pure '60s made guitar. Danelectro stopped making them in 2004 if I well remember, I can't sleep well at nights yet, but you can still find'em in those internet pages where you buy used or weird stuff. And now I show it to you in red burst (tiny). Greetings to Wicked Child.

Welcome be thou to me own personal Guitar Shire. I would be a hobbit who loves guitars, basses and music itself, playing and catalyzing music is my life. You know? Music is not something that is created, I believe music is something as energy in the Universe, can't be created nor destroyed, only transformed; and for music I belive it can only be found, but people tend to say: "Ooooh!, Ahhhh! I 'composed' this or that". Furthermore, Music is just Math, PERFECT. My main focus here is to praise the means of creating music, mainly guitars and basses, which I find sexy, powerful and awe inspiring. As artist, musician and poet Thom Yorke once said: "sometimes the best thing to do with a guitar is just look at it". And that is just what I like to do...
